Sam is the biological daughter of Alexis Davis who had Sam as a teen and was forced to give her up by Sam's grandfather, Mikkos Cassadine. Sam's biological father is unknown. He never knew Alexis was pregnant with Sam. Sam was adopted by Cody McCall and Evelyn Bass. Cody and Evelyn's older son, Danny McCall, was mentally handicapped. Evelyn decided she didn't want Sam, so she took her son Danny and left. Sam was raised by Cody, who taught her how to salvage and run cons. When Sam found out about her mother and brother, she went to find them. In an accident, Danny burned his mother's house down with her inside. Sam continued to run cons as her father taught her while using the money to take care of Danny. She married several wealthy men in order to scam them out of their money, and provide a life for herself and her brother.
In August 2009, fans were shocked by a casting call for the character. Despite rumors and speculation, Monaco's co-stars Steve Burton (Jason Morgan) and Nancy Lee Grahn (Alexis Davis) have denied she is departing from the show.[2] Monaco herself has dispelled the rumors, stating there was "really no doubt" she would renew her contract, It was merely standard procedure for ABC to release the casting call since she and the network had not signed off on a new contract by a set deadline.[3]
Sam arrived in Port Charles on October 1, 2003, and quickly teamed up with Jasper "Jax" Jacks to look for the 5 lucky cards of the Dead Man's hand that would save Jax's father's life. When Jax's father dies, however, there is friction because Sam had sabotaged Jax's car so he could not get his hands on the cards. Jax and Sam consummate their relationship, but they break up when Jax discovers Sam's role in tampering his car. Sam begins a sexual relationship with Sonny Corinthos, and makes an enemy of Sonny's wife, Carly. During the night of the Port Charles Hotel fire, after a brief split with Sonny, she and Jax sleep together thinking they're going to die. Surviving she reunites with Sonny briefly only to break up again, finding out she was pregnant. Having been with both Jax and Sonny around the time of conception, she did not know which man had fathered her baby.[4]
Sonny's lieutenant Jason Morgan asks her if he could pose as the baby's father so that Sonny and Carly could stay together for the sake of Michael, but Sonny soon learns that Sam is carrying his child. Sam agrees to Jason's request and they almost marry, but Sam backs out because they are not in love and she still has feelings for Sonny.[5] Jason and Carly also protect Sam from her jealous ex-boyfriend Nico. Jason and Sam decided to name her daughter Lila Morgan after Jason's late grandmother Lila Morgan Quartermaine. Sam and Jason start growing closer, trusting each other and falling in love. But when Sonny's newly-discovered daughter, Kristina Corinthos, is in need of stem cells from Sam's unborn child, Sam initially refuses but goes into labor after a confrontation with Kristina's mother Alexis, causing her baby to be stillborn.[6] Sam is heartbroken by the loss of her child and outraged at Alexis for her role in the tragedy, but is comforted when Jason tells her that part of her daughter will always live on in Kristina.
Sam and Jason admit their love for one another, and after getting engaged in January 2005, they become foster parents of sorts when Sam agrees to care for the child of a young mother named Bridget. Jason names the baby Hope, but Bridget decides that she wants her baby back. To avoid a court battle, Jason decides Hope should be returned to her mother. Sam is hurt and angry at this decision, but they reunite after Sam is accused of kidnapping Kristina and they search for Michael, Kristina, and Morgan after they are kidnapped by Faith Roscoe on orders from Jason's brother A.J. Quartermaine. After finding the kids, Jason and Sam try to help Michael recover from the traumatizing event of being kidnapped. She is there for Jason when he loses his memory in 2005. Sam convinces Jason to undergo a controversial treatment administered by his old girlfriend, Dr. Robin Scorpio.[7] He and Sam fall in love all over again and he proposes to her a second time before he begins his treatment. After the treatment, Jason gets his memory back and remembers his life with Sam, but the procedure caused him to get a brain aneurysm. Jason initially refuses to have surgery to repair the damage, and he and Sam move to Hawaii to live out his last days peacefully. However, Jason eventually realizes that he wants to live in order to be with Sam and returns to Port Charles to have the surgery, saving his life.
During an encephalitis epidemic, Alexis Davis receives an antidote instead of Sam's brother, Danny McCall. Before he dies, Danny tells Sam how glad he was that their parents "chose her." [8] Sam is angry and blames Alexis for her brother's death. However, DNA tests reveal that she was adopted and Danny was not her biological brother. She and Jason find records indicating that Sam was born to a 16-year-old Alexis, who Sam and Jason both despise with a passion. After Sam is shot by Manny Ruiz, whom Alexis had recently gone to great lengths to acquit, and rendered infertile, Jason confronts Alexis telling her that Sam is her daughter and that she's dying. Alexis comes to Sam's hospital room and they make amends.[9] Alexis guilts Jason into breaking up with Sam for her own good and after months of trying to win Jason back, Jason tells her that he can't love her anymore. Sam subsequently gets into a heated argument with Alexis over her mother's meddling ways, during which Alexis calls Sam derogatory names and orders her to leave and stop "poisoning" her younger sisters; infuriated and hurt, Sam gets drunk and has sex with Ric Lansing, Alexis' husband, afterwards. Unfortunately, Alexis and Jason, having both returned in an attempt to apologize and patch things up with Sam, witness this.
Jason returns home where Elizabeth Spencer shows up. They are both hurt and they have sex. Elizabeth becomes pregnant. Sam and Jason reconcile. During a hostage crisis at the Metro Court, Jason learns that he is the father of Elizabeth's son, Jake. Jason and Elizabeth decide not to tell Sam or Lucky, who thinks the baby is his. Sam eventually learns about Jake's paternity and immediately becomes insanely jealous. While Jason is awaiting trial for murder, Sam witnesses Jake being kidnapped but chooses not to intervene. Sam visits Jason and breaks up with him, citing his lies and emotional unfaithfulness as her reasons.
When Alexis is diagnosed with advanced lung cancer, she makes amends with Sam and entrusts her to look after Kristina and Molly if she doesn't survive. However, when Sam shoots and apparently kills Diego Alcazar in front of Kristina, unintentionally traumatizing her in the process, Alexis cuts Sam out of her life. However, the two continue to be drawn together for Kristina's sake and because Sam wants to help Alexis beat her cancer. The two eventually reconcile when Alexis offers to defend Sam when she is put on trial for Diego's murder. The charges are dismissed due to a lack of evidence, and Alexis beats her cancer.
Sam hires Elizabeth's husband, Lucky Spencer, as her bodyguard with the sole purpose to seduce him to make Jason jealous and Elizabeth suffer. She sleeps with him on September 17, 2007. Sam hires two crewmen from her Everyday Heroes set to scare Elizabeth and her two young sons with guns in the park so that Jason will stay away from Elizabeth for her safety; unfortunately, Sam's plan works too well, and when Jason discovers Sam's involvement, he is furious and openly threatens to kill her if she tries anything again. After the truth comes out about Jake's paternity and Sam's role in the kidnapping, Lucky breaks up with her only to reunite shortly after Sam is attacked by the Text Message Killer and then hit by a car, whose driver is believed to be Elizabeth.[10] It was later revealed that the actual driver who hit her was Monica Quartermaine, but Sam decided not to press charges against her. When Monica went to trial for driving while intoxicated, Sam spoke up for her and asked the judge for leniency and as a result Monica was sent to a rehab facility and had to serve 6 months of community service instead of doing jail time. Sam and Lucky continue their relationship while she is stalked and later kidnapped by Diego Alcazar, masked as the Text Message Killer.[11] Sam survives, but her relationship with Lucky hits shaky ground when she begins working undercover to gain evidence on mobster Andrei Karpov and put a stop to his counterfeit drug ring that was importing illegal drugs and making patients at General Hospital sick. In November 2008, she helps Jason save Jake from Karpov's associates,[12] and later Jason and Elizabeth end their relationship. After a hospital crisis in February 2009, Lucky and Sam have a very civil break-up and decide to remain friends.
When Jason and his protege Damian Spinelli find themselves entrapped by the FBI, Sam manages to destroy the evidence against her friends. Jason, in turn, helps Sam and Spinelli set up a private investigation firm.[13]
When her sister Kristina causes Sonny's latest wife Claudia Zacchara to crash her car and lose her unborn child, Kristina and her half brother Michael Corinthos run away to Mexico. Sam and Jason track the siblings but a resurfaced Jerry Jacks manages to capture Sam, luring Jason into a trap. During the ensuing shootout, Jason is pinned beneath a pile of rubble and Jerry taunts Jason with lies about Claudia's innocence before shooting him twice and leaving him for dead. While trapped Jason hallucinates Michael, Kristina and Carly separately. Sam escapes and returns just in time to rescue Jason and takes care of him. Sam helps her former lover heal and for a while, Jason starts hallucinating that he is in Hawaii with Sam. Jason and Sam grow closer as Sam nurses him back to health. They then end up sleeping together. Shortly after they have sex Sam and Jason decide not to talk about it. Once on the road again, they find the teens and return to Port Charles, and Sam gets into an argument with Alexis over whether or not she is being too lenient on Kristina. After they return, Jason and Sam remain drawn to each other and they soon admit they have feeling for one another.[14]
Jason and Sam find the proof they need to bring Claudia down on Michael's shooting. When he brings the evidence to Sonny, Claudia is brought down in front of Port Charles by Sonny for getting Michael shot. She kidnaps Carly, who is pregnant and goes into labor just as Claudia escapes. Jason heads out and bursts into a cabin with a woman and two children. He heads back to his penthouse to regroup. Jason and Sam go looking for them, but Michael finds them first and kills Claudia. Sam takes Carly and her newborn baby Josslyn Jacks to the hospital, while Jason helps Michael deal with killing Claudia. Sam and Jason exchange "I Love You"s before Christmas.
Sam, Lulu and Carly are taken by the crazed artist Franco. Jason finds Carly in Franco's workshop and saves her. Later Franco finally confesses where he is holding Sam and Lulu Spencer. Jason calls Dante Falconeri to save Lulu, while he goes after Sam. Sam was never in actual danger, but Jason feels bad when it is believed that the only bomb Franco set has killed Lulu and Dante. He later reassures Sam that he does not regret coming after her first.[15] Thankfully Lulu and Dante survive and Jason is now in arguments with Sonny on how to handle Claudia's death and Franco since he left town giving Jason a warning that he will kill for every person Jason kills.[16]
After Sam's sister Kristina is abused and hospitalized by her boyfriend Kiefer Bauer, Sam is supportive and understanding. She spent lots of time with Kristina and by remembering her own abusive past relationship with Nico, Sam was able to help Kristina deal with the after affects of her abuse.[17] However, as Kristina initially lied and claimed it was Ethan Lovett who attacked her, Sam confronted and assaulted him at the Haunted Star, but the fight was broken up by Jason before things got any worse. When he later tried to ask Kristina why she blamed him, Sam caught Ethan in the act and had him arrested. After another confrontation with him at Kelly's, Sam found herself debating Kristina's story with Jason; Jason insists that they don't actually have any proof that Ethan did it, while Sam declares that Kristina's word is all the proof she needs. After coming home from the movies with her youngest sister Molly Lansing, they discovered Kiefer's body on the side of the road. Sam and Molly called an ambulance and when arriving at the hospital they found that Kristina had been beaten again.[18] Sam subsequently discovered from Jason that Kiefer was the one who was beating her all along, and that Kristina had lied out of fear that Sonny would kill Kiefer. Sam was shocked and guilt-ridden that she wasn't there for her sister and didn't realize the truth when she knows better than anyone that people lie when they're scared, but nonetheless relieved to discover that Jason and Sonny had nothing to do with Kiefer's hit-and-run.
Shortly after arriving at the hospital, Kiefer died and after staying with Kristina, Alexis later revealed to Sam that she had been the one to hit Kiefer. Sam insisted that Alexis could not turn herself in because Kristina needed her now more than ever, but Alexis did confess to Mac Scorpio shortly afterwards and got out of jail time thanks to Diane Miller's maneuvering. Sam continued to be supportive of her mother and sister when Keifer's grief stricken father Warren Bauer vowed revenge on Alexis and Kristina both, at one point slugging him when he shouted that Kristina was nothing but a little tramp who deserved to get beaten up.[19]
Following semi-doctored evidence found by Dante, Sonny is accused of Claudia's murder and put on trial, and the prosecutor, Claire Walsh, soon resorts to unethical tactics to get a conviction, going so far as to make Johnny Zacchara lie that Sonny was physically abusive towards Claudia and pull Morgan Corinthos out of school under false pretenses to question him without Carly and Jax's knowledge. Just as the verdict is about to come in, Dante enters the courtroom and surrenders Michael as Claudia's true killer. Though Dante had only done so under the belief that Michael would get a lenient sentence, Judge Carroll, fed up with the courtroom antics and angry that the trial had been a farce, instead sentences Michael to five years in Pentonville Adult Correctional Facility to punish everyone in the courtroom for covering up Claudia's murder and for making a mockery of his court. In order to protect Michael, Jason makes a deal with Claire and is sent to prison along with him, about which Sam is very understanding. Before he is taken away, Jason asks Sam to help Kristina understand Sonny better, but Sam admits that she is having trouble understanding Sonny herself and believes that Kristina has a right to be angry with him.
She has been visiting Jason numerous times in Pentonville. Sam is upset to learn that she was denied conjugal visits because she is not Jason's wife. With the help of Spinelli, Sam poses as Brenda Barrett (Jason's ex-wife) and gets a conjugal visit with Jason.[20] Eventually, Dante and Claire, motivated by guilt over their roles in Michael's imprisonment, convinced the judge to release Michael on parole, but unfortunately, Jason was forced to stay behind.
During this time, Kristina, blaming Sonny for Michael's conviction, began to fake a relationship with Johnny to spite him, of which Sam vocally disapproved. When Kristina repeatedly ignored Sam's and Alexis' warnings, Sam proposed to Alexis that she talk to Jason because Johnny owed him. When attending a family dinner at Sonny's, Kristina snuck out to see Johnny under the pretense of studying for her SATs, but Sam investigated and found out the truth. Johnny finally convinced Kristina to end the charade, but then she was caught in a car bomb meant for Johnny that was planted by Sonny. In response to Kristina's rebellious behavior, Alexis and Sonny immediately began to place new restrictions on her; though Sam supported their decision, she told Alexis that they needed to remember that Kristina had yet to fully heal from her ordeal with Kiefer.
On July 30, 2010, Sam meets up with Kristina at Kelly's and discovers what happened to her during the hospital lockdown; Kiefer's father actually attempted to kill her, but Michael stopped him, and Warren was shot dead by Mac. When Kristina complains about Sonny telling Michael not to fight, Sam is slightly amused by how much Kristina is becoming like Sonny. Sam tells Kristina that she thinks that she is misdirecting her anger at Kiefer towards Sonny and using that grudge to excuse her self-destructive behavior, and begs her not to waste her life by holding a grudge against her father like Sonny did.
When Maxie, Dante and Josslyn receive pictures from Franco, Dante and Claire release Jason into Dante's custody to catch Franco. Franco resurfaced June 30. After causing much havoc and mayhem in the lives of many in Port Charles, Franco disappeared again and Jason went back to prison. After being in prison for a few more weeks, Jason was eventually released when Claire found a loophole in his sentence. He returned home and was reunited with an overjoyed Sam.[21]
On August 11, 2010, Brenda returned to Port Charles on the run from the Balkan, an international crime lord whose son was murdered by Brenda. Jason was appointed her bodyguard. She moved into the Penthouse with him, unfortunately, this left Jason and Sam with very little time to spend together.
On January 11, 2011, Sam learns from Dr. Kelly Lee she could become pregnant with the assistance of an experimental procedure called "fertility reconstruction". Sam downplays her real feelings about it, saying she likes her life the way it is. On January 17, 2011, Sam returns to the hospital to talk to Dr. Lee about the procedure more. Afterwards, it is shown she is researching it on the internet. She has not mentioned any of this to Jason. Jason later finds the pamphlet about "fertility reconstruction". Sam and Jason later discuss having children and what a family would mean for their lives, ultimately coming to the mutual agreement their lives are too dangerous and hectic for them to have children.
On February 4, Sam was at Jake's with Maxie Jones and Lulu Spencer, when she begins to feel nauseous and dizzy. Maxie believes the nausea and dizziness is being caused because Sam might be pregnant. Sam denies there's any way she could be pregnant. Maxie and Lulu continue to push the issue and tell her she should buy a pregnancy test. So in order to shut them up, Sam buys a pregnancy test. When she returns to Jason's Penthouse to take the test, Jason walks in and finds her with it. She doesn't take the test right then. She goes to the hospital to get it done there. On Valentine's Day, during a romantic meal with Jason, they find out she is not pregnant. Although Sam says she knew it wasn't possible, it still hurt to hear.
Jason and Sam discovered Brenda's lawyer, Theo Hoffman, was the Balkan They immediately went out to stop him. In the process, Jason was caught in an ambush and barely escaped. After Sonny and Brenda's wedding reception, Brenda was seemingly killed in a car bomb. Though it was believed it was the Balkan, Jason received a call from the newly returned Franco, who hinted he was the one who planted the bomb. When the authorities managed to get through the wreckage, everybody was shocked to discover Sam within the limo, with no sign of Brenda; Theo's henchmen had swapped Sam for Brenda and blown up the limo as a distraction. The plan was for Sam to be killed in the explosion and burned beyond recognition, and for everyone to think she was Brenda.
Fortunately, the limo was bomb-proofed, and Sam survived with only a concussion. However, when she regained consciousness while Jason was at her side, she had lost her hearing. While being visited by Jason, Alexis, Molly, and Kristina, Sam learned a degree of sign language from Molly in the event her hearing loss is permanent. Later, while alone in the room with Kristina, Sam decided to get out of bed and stretch her legs out, only to pass out almost as soon as her feet touched the ground.
Tests confirmed nothing was wrong with Sam and that she merely fainted. Once Alexis and Kristina left, Sam appeared to regain her hearing and was discharged from the hospital a few days later.
On March 17, 2011, Jake Spencer is hit by a car and severely injured. Sam is one of several people who were on the road at the time of the accident. When Jake dies on the operating table, Sam teams up with Dante Falconeri to discover who is responsible, motivated by guilt over what she had done to Elizabeth and Jake back in 2007. They discovered Sam had been driving on the road. They sent her car down to forensics to be tested. Sam and Dante then uncovered six other suspects. As soon as they discovered Carly was a suspect, forensics called Dante back and told him there was no damage to Sam's car. She was cleared off the suspect list.
Hoping to help Jason get over the pain of losing Jake, Carly convinces him and Sam to have a baby of their own. On April 19, Sam and Jason revisit the idea of fertility reconstruction. Sam decides she wants to go through with it. She meets with Dr. Lee about the procedure, and discovers not only is she an excellent candidate for the procedure, but if it is successful, she could get pregnant and carry a baby safely to term. On May 6, Sam went in to have the procedure. It was completed without any complications. On May 26, Sam learns the surgery was a success. When she is fully healed, she will be able to carry a baby safely to term.
On June 17, Sam suffers stomach cramps while on a stakeout with Spinelli. The two go to the hospital. Robin speculates Sam may be pregnant. Just as Sam is tucked into a hospital bed, Lisa Niles, a mentally unhinged ex-surgeon who has been stalking and tormenting Patrick and Robin for over a year, induces a shootout, causing the hospital to lock down. Later on, Sam finds out she's not pregnant. In July 2011, Jason decides to take the next step in his relationship with Sam, and asks Maxie Jones to help him set up a romantic rooftop dinner, so that he can propose to Sam. On July 21, 2011, Jason proposed to Sam and they set their wedding date for September 23, 2011.
On August 5, Carly hears from Skye Quartermaine that her ex-husband Jax is back in town and fearing that he would go after Josslyn, she went to Jason for help and together they rushed off to get Josslyn. Meanwhile, Elizabeth was rushing Lucky's new wife Siobhan to the hospital after she fell down a flight of stairs and sustained a concussion. The two cars collided, and Jason is critically injured with another brain injury. Sam sat vigil by his bedside while he was unconscious and leaned on Monica and Edward for support. Robin discovered that a piece of AJ's dashboard from the original accident was lodged in Jason's frontal lobe and they had to remove it. After talking with Sam, Jason decides to have the surgery to remove the inorganic matter. While Jason is in surgery, Sam dreams about how her life could have been different with Jason, but during his surgery something goes wrong.
On September 22, 2011, Sam and Jason finally get married. Their wedding occurs at a Chinese restaurant and away from the pressure of the "official" wedding Maxie was planning. The next day, the actual wedding day, they appear at the church and announce that they got married last night. They have a reception at the Chinese restaurant.
Jason takes her to a cabin he built on the site of the boxcar he lived in after his accident. From there they go to Hawaii and have wonderful times surfing and being together. Jason makes her a special necklace made of cowrie shell which is symbolic of fertility.
On November 8, 2011, the last night of their honeymoon, Sam was presumably raped, while drugged, by Franco. Franco sends a message to Josslyn along with a baby toy. Sam holds and dwells on the baby toy a lot. On December 12, 2011 Sam watches a DVD sent by Franco saying that Sam should be pregnant by now and that "we're going to be a daddy" meaning himself and Jason. On December 16, 2011 she is finally able to tell Michael about the rape. Michael could relate to being raped as a pawn to hurt Jason.
